100 People Project :: Two High School Improv Artists
Posted by Harvey on March 30, 2010
This week the 100 people post will bring you two high school students who are part of the improv team at JH Picard High School. They recently won the competition at the Varscona Theatre and are now heading to Ottawa for the national improv championship. Good luck you two! For this fun filled shoot, we made them do some impromptu improv with only 1 prop and hilarity ensued! They had us laughing non stop which was no small feet for the brutal hour of 8am (on a Saturday!!).
Josephine

Who are you?
I’m a High school Student and improv artist.
Where do you improv?
At my high school [JH Picard High School].
Do you perform around town?
We perform for the high school festival at the Varscona. It happened last week and again last night as well.
Where can people see you perform?
We’ll be in Ottawa soon for nationals and you can find out more on our Facebook pages.
If you could wake up anywhere tomorrow where would it be?
New York.
Describe your perfect bite
Avocado on toast. Or toast in general. I burn toast a lot though. I can’t really cook toast and I’m not a domestic being.
What goes wrong in the toast making process?
The toaster doesn’t pop on its own and if you walk away it will eventually light on fire. The smoke detector doesn’t even go off because I took the batteries out because it constantly beeps when I burn my toast. [NOTE: please put those batteries back in Joshephine! See our house fire post for all the reasons why smoke detectors and insurance are a must!!]
My most embarrassing moment …
I was at work and this girl was rubbing her stomach and I asked her when she was due. She wasn’t pregnant.
My most significant moment…
The other week we won our improve tournament.
What is your fear?
Being alone for a long time. Like shut alone in a house for years.
What makes you happy?
Coffee in the morning.
Folgers in your cup?
Yeah.
What are you going to do after school?
I’m thinking of going into journalism.
So you’ll be doing what I’m doing right now…
Yes but I’ll be more prepared [ouch!]
Any advice for people starting out in improv?
Don’t be afraid to act stupid, it’s the best part.

Shadi

Who are you?
I am a drummer and improv artist.
If you could wake up anywhere tomorrow where would it be?
Montreal or Lake Tahoe.
Why Lake Tahoe?
They have really nice mountains.
Is that for snowboarding?
It is.
My most significant moment…
Ta ta ta ta the time I went to the moon… [improv?]
Most embarrassing moment?
Last year at nationals I made a joke about a Pontiac Aztec and no one laughed or got the reference. [It has a tent in the back It’s so practical ;)]
Describe your perfect bite.
I’m of Lebanese origin. So it would be a well-made Lebanese Donair aka a “Shawarma”
My happiest moment was…
Last night probably, last night we got to perform at the Varscona Theatre and were told just to get out there and have some fun because we weren’t being judged this time. We were performing with the rapid fire professionals and it was really fun.
What is your advice for an improv artist trying to start out?
Don’t make crappy one liners. [We’re sensing some bitterness over the Aztec incident]
What do you want to do when you’re finished school?
I’m thinking of civil engineering.
Any last words?
