100 People Project :: A Future Teacher and a Future International Model

This week we took some shots of Andrew, a student at the University of Alberta who is so busy he just couldn’t put his books down long enough to be photographed (see photos).  He was a great sport and one of the nicest and most polite person I have ever had the opportunity to interview (he’s also Lyra Brown’s boyfriend). Also featured this week is Brandi, a girl who is well on her way to becoming an international fashion model. She’s in Grade 11 here in Edmonton so watch for her on billboards and TV coming soon.

Who are you?

A Musician and a Student at the University of Alberta.

If you could wake up anywhere tomorrow where would it be?

I would wake up in New Zealand in a field of grass.

Describe your perfect bite…

A nice piece of vegetarian pizza.

Are you a vegetarian?

No but I’m trying to be. [He agreed that he’s a part timer]

What is your most significant moment?

One time when I was the saddest I’ve ever been and I was crying my eyes out, I called a friend and she read a few quotes out of a book and I immediately felt on top of the world. It was the most defining moment ever.

What book was it?

The Power of Now.

My most embarrassing moment is…

There are lots but one happened in grade 1. The teacher said line up. Boys here and girls here. I didn’t hear that last part and I lined up in the girls line and everyone laughed at me. I didn’t even notice the difference between the lines.

You’re a musician, where can people hear your music?

MySpace.

Where can people see you play?

You can see me play at cafés around town. I don’t have one place where I usually play. [Follow his MySpace to see where Andrew is playing next].

Where can people buy your album?

Megatunes or you can buy one at any of my shows.

Describe your music making process.

One way I can make songs is when I’m walking home  from the bus at night and boom (snaps fingers) these words just flow into my head so I have to keep repeating them on the walk home. It’s a 15 minute walk home and when I get home I write them down and then after a month or a long while later I make up a riff and fit them together.

What would be your advice for an artist just starting out?

Try not to focus on being better or worse than other people. If you genuinely like your music, and you’re not comparing it to someone else’s and you enjoy playing, I think that’s almost all you need. That’s the base. Then work on selling it to an audience. That’s most important, don’t compare yourself [to anyone] because people like different music . What normal people call shitty music, lots of people just love.

Describe your genre of music.

It can be rock, it can be folk, I try to add some jazzy chords in there.

Andrew is working really hard at improving his fluency in french (he wants to teach in a french school). He said if he can’t improve his french he may not choose to be a teacher.

What do you do for fun besides Modeling?

I like to paint and draw. And go on adventures.

Are you shy?

Yeah usually when I meet new people but I’ll open up.

Describe your perfect  bite…

Lyra and I make really good sandwiches and we can make them in less than two minutes, we have a pretty good system. I also really like sidekicks.

Where can people see photos of you modeling?

Hopefully on the cover of some fashion magazine one day.  http://gfx2.hotmail.com/mail/w4/pr01/ltr/emoticons/smile_tongue.gif

If someone wanted to hire you as a model how would they go about doing so?

They would have to go to modemodels.com/edmonton . There is a phone number on the site they could call.

What would I find in your refrigerator right now?

Apple juice (my favourite), chocolate milk, pickles, lots of fruits and veggies.

Can people see you on the runway any time soon? Edmonton fashion week perhaps?

I was just in a hairshow for L’oreal. I don’t know of anything else at the moment. I will most likely be in Edmonton fashion week but that isn’t until September.

What advice do you have for a model just starting out?

It’s not as easy as you may think. It’s not just standing there and looking pretty. You have to be ready to work hard on your look, your walk, and on posing.

What’s the most embarrassing thing that ever happened to you?

There’s lots of little things like walking into poles, falling into puddles getting soaked and ripping my pants, things like that. I can’t think of anything extremely embarrassing right now.

When your finished high school what are you going to do?

Finished? I’m taking a year off to decide what I would like to do in the future. I hope to do some modelling. I should probably get a job as well.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

My dream job would be a part time model, part time artist but you can’t look young forever and artists don’t make a lot until the’re dead. So I’m not really sure.

Any last words?

Happiness is only real when it’s shared.
